Stablecoins on Canadian platforms must meet CSA terms for value-referenced crypto assets. The federal Stablecoin Act received Royal Assent on March 26, 2026 but is not in force; Finance Canada expects the framework in 2027. Stablecoins are not CDIC insured, and converting another coin into one is a taxable disposition.
Figures as of October 31, 2026.
A stablecoin aims to hold a fixed value, usually one US or Canadian dollar. Spending one through a card avoids most price swings between top-up and purchase, but it is still a crypto-asset under tax law and is not a deposit.
Today: CSA terms for value-referenced crypto assets
The CSA calls them value-referenced crypto assets (VRCAs). Platforms may offer them only on terms that include reserves held with a qualified custodian for holders and public disclosure about reserves and governance (CSA, October 5, 2023). After December 31, 2024, platforms could offer only VRCAs that comply with their decision or undertaking.
Next: the federal Stablecoin Act
- Royal Assent: March 26, 2026 (Bill C-15). The Act shows “not in force” in the consolidation current to September 30, 2026.
- Finance Canada’s framework (page modified March 31, 2026): 1:1 reserves of high-quality liquid assets, redemption at par, no interest or yield paid by issuers, Bank of Canada supervision of non-bank issuers, expected in force in 2027.
- Proposed Stablecoin Regulations were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on October 24, 2026 for comment. They are proposals, not law.
What a stablecoin card does not give you
- No CDIC insurance: CDIC lists stablecoins as not covered.
- No escape from tax records: swapping bitcoin into a stablecoin is a disposition; spending the stablecoin is another (usually with little gain or loss).
- No guarantee of the peg: reserves and redemption rights depend on the issuer.

What this means for you
A stablecoin reward is a US-dollar reward unless it is pegged to CAD. It is not CDIC insured, and converting it is a disposition.
