Methodology

How we verify and calculate

The rules we follow so you can check our work, and a dated log of what changed.

Short answer

Every card figure comes from the issuer’s own page and carries that page’s date or the date we read it; anything not stated is shown as “not stated”. Calculators are deterministic, run in your browser and are unit-tested. USD caps convert at the Bank of Canada rate. Every change is logged below by date.

Figures as of November 3, 2026.
Mitey the yeti checking a source
Mitey checks each figure against the issuer page and writes the date beside it before it goes live.

What counts as verified

A card appears only if its issuer’s own website (product page, fee schedule, cardholder agreement, terms or help centre) shows that it is offered to Canadian residents. Every fee, reward rate, payout rule, province rule, custody detail and phone-wallet claim links to the page it came from, with the date shown on that page or, where none is shown, the date we read it.

Review sites, affiliate pages, social media and press coverage are used only to find candidates, never as the source of a figure. When we could not confirm a figure, we write “not stated” instead of estimating it. When we could not confirm a card at all, it goes on the left-out list with the reason.

How the calculators work

  • Rewards vs fees: yearly rewards = (monthly CAD + foreign purchases) × reward rate × 12, capped where the issuer caps rewards. Costs are fixed fees (annual plus 12 × monthly), the stated FX fee on foreign purchases, and percentage ATM fees above the free amount. Break-even = monthly spend at which rewards cover fixed fees.
  • Volatility: each month’s reward is credited at that month’s price along a straight-line path through your chosen midpoint and end, and held to the end. A staked balance takes the full start-to-end change.
  • Stake and lock-up: extra yearly rewards ÷ stake value = the price drop that cancels them.
  • Reward records: average cost across credits; two treatments (income at receipt vs nil cost) shown side by side because CRA has not addressed card cashback specifically.

The engine is open in the site’s source and covered by unit tests. Tools run in your browser and send nothing.

Independence and money

CryptoCards.ca is part of the MITEY network, based in Calgary. We have no affiliate relationship with any card on this site and no issuer pays for placement or reviews. If that ever changes, the affected page will say so at the top. We do not give investment, tax or legal advice.
