Rewards

What is a crypto reward really worth?

A 2% reward paid in a volatile token is not 2% cashback. How price moves after the reward is credited change its value, with scenarios and a calculator.

Short answer

A crypto reward is worth what the coin is worth when you sell or spend it, not what the card advertised. If you hold rewards, their value rises and falls with the coin. A 2% reward followed by a 50% fall is worth about 1%; the same reward before a rise is worth more. CAD cashback has no such swing.

Card marketing quotes a reward rate as if it were cash. It is cash only on the day it is credited. After that, a reward paid in bitcoin or a platform token behaves like a small monthly purchase of that coin.

The stake matters more than the rewards

On cards whose tiers require a staked token, the same price move hits the stake. A 20% fall on a $4,000 stake is $800, many times a typical year of rewards. See staking for card tiers.

Ways people handle it

  • Convert rewards to CAD on a schedule (each conversion is a disposition).
  • Treat crypto rewards as part of your crypto allocation, not as cashback.
  • Choose a card that pays in an asset you would hold anyway, or in CAD.
Nothing here predicts prices. The CSA warns crypto assets can be very volatile and you could lose some or all of your money.

What this means for you

Count crypto rewards as a small, regular purchase of that coin. If you want cashback, convert on a schedule and record each conversion.
