Staking to unlock a card tier: the trade-off in numbers

Some cards pay higher rewards only if you lock up the platform’s token. Why a small price drop on the stake can erase a year of rewards, with a calculator.

Short answer

A higher reward tier that requires staking a platform token turns a spending card into an investment in that token. If the stake falls in value, the loss can exceed the extra rewards. Compare the tier’s extra yearly rewards with the stake: that ratio is the price drop that wipes out the benefit.

Tiered cards usually ask you to stake (lock up) a quantity of the platform’s own token for a set period. You earn a higher reward rate and sometimes perks. You also take on the token’s price risk for the whole lock-up period, plus any rule changes the platform makes.

The break-even drop

Divide the extra yearly rewards the tier gives you by the CAD value of the stake. The result is the percentage fall in the token’s price that cancels the benefit. Example: a tier adds $180 a year in rewards and needs a $4,000 stake. A 4.5% fall in the token’s price wipes out the gain. Crypto tokens can move that much in a day.

Tax

CRA says staking rewards on a centralized platform are generally income when credited (modified November 10, 2025). The stake itself is still your property: when you later sell it, you report a gain or loss against its cost.

Questions to ask before staking for a tier

  • How long is the lock-up, and can the platform change the tier rules during it?
  • Are rewards paid in the same token you staked, which doubles your exposure to it?
  • Is there a monthly cap on rewards that limits the benefit at higher spend?
  • What happens to the tier if the token’s CAD value falls below the requirement?

What this means for you

If you would not buy the token for its own sake, the tier is a bet you did not mean to make. Compare the subscription option, which has no price risk.
